Hello my name is Dr. Maria Madison principal at College Park Elementary School. I am one of the many principal leaders that serve the NHCS district. I attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where were I received my doctoral degree in Education as well as my Master of School Administration and Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction degree. I achieved my Bachelor of Arts degree in K-6 Education at North Carolina Central University. I have been in education over 28 years impacting the lives of students, teachers, parents, and community partners. My educational career began as a teacher and now Principal. Some previous schools in the district that I had the pleasure of serving where Carolina Beach, Snipes, Eaton (Teacher), Bellamy, Pine Valley (Assistant Principal), and Gregory Elementary School (Principal).
My leadership style that I convey to my College Park family is that everyone is born with a purpose and my job is to serve you to help you develop that purpose. I strive for my College Park Family to find the leader within themselves so they too can help someone else to fulfill their purpose in life. College Park School is the Home of the OWLS-Outstanding Wise Leaders. If you stop by the Park you will find me closely monitoring the academic and social progress of my College Park family. I consider myself as a natural relationship builder! I am proud of the many accomplishments achieved over the years by the students, staff, and parents at College Park Elementary School under my leadership. This is evidenced by me leading my school to be a North Carolina Title I Distinguished School for three consecutive years. One of my greatest achievements was participating in the entire process of the rebuilding of the new College Park Elementary School. I encourage you, whether you have children in our district or not, to come and take part in school activities and find ways to volunteer in our school buildings. I invite you to stop by the Park where students are learning today and Leading Tomorrow!
Richard Kortan is originally from Arizona where he graduated with his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University. He has taught in both the elementary and middle school settings. Mr. Kortan has completed his 12th year in New Hanover County with the last two years being at The Park.
Mr. Kortan and his wife have a son and daughter. As a family, they enjoy traveling, sports and the arts. Mr. Kortan is very excited to continue to be part of the Owl family while helping children become Outstanding Wise Leaders. Likewise, he enjoys helping them become Michigan Wolverines and Pittsburgh Steeler fans. Go Blue and Go Steelers!
